Break it right the first time. Fix it better the next time.
true going a little leaner will improve fuel mileage, but to get repeatability just leaving it in closed loop control but maybe moving the rich/lean point (be it in VE table or however it is in, I'm sure I'll find out soon enough, I'm going to go the same route with a tuner within the year most likely) is much better than trying to get it to run in open loop... the normal narrow band oxygen sensor only knows that the system is rich or lean not the actual AFR so for the most part you just get to modify how long it stays rich or lean (to keep a catalyst working efficiently the fueling is switched between rich and lean to get some extra fuel and oxygen mixed in the cat for it's reaction to work)

What you've seen are reasonably safe numbers, running lean and or too much spark advance makes for a more knock sensitive system, higher cylinder temperatures and pressures increase preignition.
Good info and I really appreciate it. I want to purchase withing the next couple of months. I am still trying to find out if my eec-v explorer pcm is supported.

Wonderful. The government control something else in our lives. Asia is the biggest polluter in the world. Their air and water quality sucks. I guess there is a big invisible wall that keeps there pollution from crossing the atlantic and pacific. Good lord.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

So are you saying our government should try to regulate Asian countries? Or are you jealous that the US isn't the biggest polluter in the world?

I'm not saying that I agree with or comply with everything. I also firmly believe that the government controls too much of our lives. But shouldn't there be some amount of control? Shouldn't we take some measures to be responsible citizens of this planet and care for our environment? Do you want the US to be like Asia? What, exactly, are you trying to say by pointing an accusatory finger at Asia?

No.I said none of the such in any of my post.

Or are you jealous that the US isn't the biggest polluter in the world?
Your assumption is wrong on this one.

But shouldn't there be some amount of control?
There should. I believe the EPA is mediocre at best sometimes enforcing rules and regulations. Example( Flint,MI)

Shouldn't we take some measures to be responsible citizens of this planet and care for our environment?
We should. But if we were as individuals the government wouldn't do it for us. I do dispose of all my waste properly.

What, exactly, are you trying to say by pointing an accusatory finger at Asia?
What exactly is accusatory about this statement. 2/3 of air pollution deaths occur in Asia. Zoom in on Bhatiari,Bangladesh ship salvage yard and you can see oil slicks in the water around all the beached ships rotting in the ocean.

By the way this post is in no way aggressive in nature. I know subjects like these can be touchy. If we have to I can open a thread in the gen section and continue. I would like to keep this thread tuning related. Thank you.

I was just trying to figure out what you were trying to say. I understand the frustration caused by our government sticking their noses too far into our lives. I just don't see any relationship between that and Asia. Your statements didn't make much sense together. We can't regulate other countries. We can only try to make sure that we act responsibly and set a decent example.

I wasn't trying to fire things up.

A little more depth into my statement. I was trying to convey that our government already has tons of environmental regulations on its citizens/industries. At the same time the polluted air from southern Asia drifts over the Pacific to the West Coast of the US. Basically I think a good percentage of what is being regulated just gets cancelled out by outside pollution sources.

It's all good brother my brain just works differently than a lot of people. I guess that's what makes human beings diverse.

Does anyone have an hptuners mpvi2 they want to sell. They are close to rolling out support for my pcm finally. I would hate to have to buy a sct scanner just to tune the ranger and them still have to buy hptuners.

I looked at a lot of those tuners and finally decided to go with a Megasquirt PNP Gen2 ECU and use TunerStudio for the tuning. Yes, the learning curve is high for us digital immigrants, but I also wanted to eliminate my distributor and put Ford EDIS (ignition) on my 5.0. The ECU, Wide Band, and software totaled about $1200.00, but I think it was worth it. And, it is plug and play.

Where did you see that they are adding support? That's good news.

Update.
Called them Friday and they told me they have been collecting data on the eec-v for a couple of years now and are still working to make it flawless before releasing full compatibility. When I asked when they just told me they have no idea but hope it will be soon. So who knows.

What's the advantage of the HPTuners unit over an SCT?

You can buy the mpvi2 tuner with a couple credits then download hptuners software and immediately start tuning. Only Sct dealers can get access to the custom tuning software so the user will never be able to do it themselves. This is why I haven't bought an sct tuner yet because I am at the mercy of a dealer every time I want an update or want to play around with the tune file.

Oh, gotcha. Yeah - the SCT definitely has a more restricted interface for end users from what I've read. I've been a little curious about the Tweecer as well, but there's certainly a steeper learning curve there.
