hey guys im all out of ideas tranny stopped working a while ago finally got around to fixing it thought it was a gasket so i dropped the pan only to find no surprises there. pulled the valve body and fount it was not the gasket either. so i put in a trans go shift kit and also i had found that the EPC and TCC were bad so i replaced them. put it all back together and what do i find SAME PROBLEM!! truck has no reverse no drive no 2nd and no 1st. dont know what to do here i mean i didnt find ane metal in the pan so i know it cant be something major. please help if you have any ideas. sms at 8458026371 :bawling:

not a trans guy but some possible problems

forward and reverse bands
clutch packs
trans pump
torque converter
low fluid
or just plain worn out
might need a rebuild

not necessarily in that order

Front pump(main pump) is bad.

Requires rebuild to replace, so transmission removed.
You can shop for used but could be buying someone elses problem, you never know

Have you loosened a trans cooler line to see if fluid is flowing should have pretty good pressure

Might seem smug but when you droped the pan did you put enough fluid back in it low fluid will cause a no go if it is full up i would say its the pump or the torque converter if you pull it to replace pump throw a reman torque converter in it and check the clutches in the direct drive no fluid flow and trying to make it go can cook the clutches quite quickly.

Just as a heads up.....

The front pump is located.......in the front of the transmission.
The torque converter has slots in it's shaft that slides into the trans, these slots lock into tabs on the front pump, so when engine is turning front pump is turning, making the pressure required for trans to operate.

Now for the heads up
When installing an automatic you have to place the torque converter in the bell housing and then slide it in, then rotate it while pushing it in, you will feel the torque converter slide in more and often hear "clicks", keep turning and pushing, usually there are 2 or 3 "clicks" as torque converter locks into front pump.
If it is locked in all the way torque converter will be inside bell housing no part sticking out.

First timers who don't know this will just bolt up the bell housing to the engine and wonder why it is so hard to get it to sit flush with the block, so they will put a few bolts in and use them to pull bell housing to block........and they will also hear a "click", but a bad one, they just broke the front pump.

I was a first timer, so I speak from experience, got it back together and nothing, no reverse, no drive, no gears, no nothing.
Expensive lesson to learn.

Ok guys all good things to check. As far as one person said the bands and forward clutches go it is a 3 month old recently replaced factory re man tranny (unfortunately my warranty ran out) so I have to do it my self. But anyway I'll definitely go ahead and check my pump and torque converter.

The A4LD trans is the base transmission that your transmission came from.

the 4R44E (4 cylinder - light-duty) and 4R55E (6 cylinder - heavy-duty; IE: Explorer) electronically controlled transmission replaced the A4LD. It is mechanically identical to the A4LD.
The 5R55E, though mechanically identical to the 4-speed 4R55E, was a five-speed transmission

And your early failure after a rebuild is not uncommon because of the way it was rebuilt.

When having an A4LD rebuilt, there are a couple of things that you need to make sure of. First and foremost, do not let a shop do a soft parts fix only (clutches, servos, and bands). This will almost ensure that you will have another repair needed right after the 1-year warranty is out. Other things you want to have replaced are: forward one-way clutch (always), overdrive drum (stamped tin, replace if out of round or heat damaged), pump (Ford only, rebuilds are prone to failure), and the converter (get the better converter with the improved lock-up clutch and brazed fins). Also, get references from the shop and call the people. Just because they can rebuild TH350's and C4's does not mean they know what they are doing with overdrive trannies.

So your rebuild was most likely a soft parts fix so doomed to early failure
