Truck- 2000 4.0 w/ a 5r55e out of a 2003ish 4.0 ranger.

The under carriage of my truck is coated w/ trans fluid from the tail shaft back. The seal looks good, is it possible that it is spewing fluid out as I am driving?

The problem started when I was back halfing my truck and the dshaft pulled out. I filled it back up, let it idle for 30 mins and went through the gears in park without a hitch. Then as soon as I hit 2nd on the street it starting making a grinding noise... Now the under carriage is coated. Dont really want to swap in a new trans if its something easy to replace/fix.

Any thoughts?

I am having the same issue

Clarke, I'll subscribe to this thread... I'm having a similar issue... (5r55e/99 Explorer) When mine goes into reverse i starts spewing fluid out.. I lost 5 Qts in 5 miles and currently stranded. So far no one has posted an idea on any of the sites for Explorer/Ranger... If I find out I'll post a link in this thread. Good luck

Clarke, I found out mine has a crack in the case just above the REV LOW servo... I am having the truck towed home this wkend and will drop the trans and try to braze the crack...

Someone suggested that if the "hard parts" (ie clutch pacs, bands, or drums) were to brake and strike the casing it could develop a leak. In other cases the leaks develop b/c of porosity of the aluminum or along the pattern seams \\

any update on your end?
