Adding Bed Lights to my 2004?

I've been dealing with a water leak which I think is the high mounted brake light, and I went to the junkyard to get another one with hopefully a better gasket (among other parts). I found one off a 2000 B3000 with the extra bed lights like my old F250 had, so I snagged it and about a foot of the harness that connected to it. My 2004 Edge has only a red lens and a single bulb in the middle, although there are places to mount bulbs outboard.

It looks pretty trivial to add the 3rd wire into the connector that goes to the lamp, and tie it to the dome light which is right below it.

Any issues with doing this?

None that I know of. Just tie it into the dome light.

I know that the cargo light... at least on certain years had a stand alone switch. But that would require pulling a new circuits to the new switch and up to the cargo light.

Tap into the dome circuit... it's already there.

All the years I am familiar with it was part of the dome light circuit.

I could very well be wrong about that... It's just in my mind that I've worked on a cargo light with a stand alone switch. Perhaps it's from a totally different flavor of truck.

On my ‘94 F250 it comes on with the dome light. A separate switch would be better, but that will be so easy to do given the dome light is right under it.

Easy. I removed the extra wire from the end of the junkyard harness, and added it to the connector in the 2004. I crimped a ring lug to the end and passed it into the dome light - it goes under the screw as shown. Bolt it in and done.

Yup, and that's what the truck will be used for. I always found the bed/cargo lights to be of great value in my F250.

Bed/cargo lights work really well with the LED bulbs, and it appears to have fixed the water leak too. The gasket in the light I put in was installed better than the one that came with it, and I added a thin skim of RTV to the gasket before I put it on. I tested it with the hose today and no drips.

Okey, this is not really the same but my solution. I have a button inside and outside, and got them on eBay. They are waterproof also. You can see the button in red...
