Default Heater core leak?

I bought my 01 Ranger in August this year and made it until maybe December before I noticed a coolant like smell every time I turned on either my heat or defroster, but I didn't worry because it started out pretty minor. Since then its almost gotten to the point where I won't even turn on my heat unless I really am cold which is good since it is starting to warm up. I'm pretty sure its a leaky heater core because Idk what else would cause the coolant smell, I'm just wondering how much of a job I have ahead of me trying to replace it?
