Hey guys,
Does anyone know whether the 10" drum brakes from the old (2002) 7.5" axle can be reused on an 8.8 31-spline axle out of an FX4 Level-II? My drum brakes are in good shape and if I didn't have to bleed the brakes it seems like the job would be significantly easier... I heard the 8.8" came with 10" drums as well but I didn't know if the backing plates would fit on the larger diameter axle tubes.

The swap is for a '02 B3000 DS. I want the stronger axle for peace of mind off road (especially after going up to the 31" FX4-sized tires) and the Torsen!

Thanks in advance!

The 8.8 did have 10" drums. The 7.5 backers will not fit the 31-spline 8.8. The tubes are different sizes. Everything else should be useable.

It seems like you are willing to go to extreme and complex lengths, possibly adding an hour or more to the job, to avoid the simple process of bleeding your brakes, which shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

I would replace the axle seals on the new axle while it is out. Move your brakes over before putting the shafts back in.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
There are some great articles in the how to tech section of this site to help you identify axles, how to interpret axle tags and axle codes on the door tags. I think there is even something there telling which axles came in which vehicles. If that doesn't help, open the diff cover, pull a side gear ND count the splines.

Generally, when talking about axles and splines, we are not Ally talking about the number of splines on the axle. Not on the input (pinion).
