4.11 or 4.56 for towing?

Hello y’all,
I have a 94’ Ranger XLT that I am using to tow a 2400 lbs 16 ft 74’ Wilderness camp trailer with. My Ranger has a 6” Skyjacker lift with 33’s under it. I was told by some reputable individuals that 4.56’s are a good fit. But yesterday I had someone tell me that’s too low and that I should run 4.11’s. Can anyone help me decide between the two ratios? Thanks in advance.

4.10's or 4.56's would work fine for no more than you are towing...or remove the lift and oversized tires and the current axle ratio would work fine too ;).

4.56's with 33's is a great combo. Towing in 4th gear at 60mph will put you at 2700-2800rpm.

I tow my race car all over the country. I am guessing the combined weight of the car and trailer is around 3500 lbs plus another 800 lbs or so on the bed. I used to tow with 4.10 gears and 31" tires. It did very well but I never put it in OD when towing.
When I switched to 33" tires for off-road adventures, I had 4.56 gears installed. That works well off-road but I still tow with the 31" tires. I found that I need to use OD or I am running higher rpm than I want to. That has worked out very well. I get better towing gas mileage than I used to and the lower gears make it easier to take off and accelerate. Most inclines just require shifting into 4th gear until I get to the really steep stuff.
You don't show what engine you have but I think the 4.56 gears with 33" tires and the 4.0 OHV engine should be a good combination. You may even end up running in OD on long trips.

I weighed my combo at a weight station. My Ranger weighed in at 5450 & the trailer @ 2400. I have the 4.0l OHV & a heavy duty A4LD tranny.

Eric:

Isn't the GVWR for your Ranger only about 4900?

Either you have more changes to your Ranger or that trailer is very nose heavy.
