06 vs 08 4.0 SOHC?

Hey guys,*

Is there any difference between the 06 and the 08?
Looking to replace my motor with a lower mileage one.*

I searched and haven't found anything concrete.*

No difference, they should be the same if the "new one" is from another Ranger or Mazda B4000

Yup it is.
Just wanted to confirm as I've heard there's a difference, but the years were never clear.

I've heard 06+ are the same and I've heard 07+ are the same.
Want to make sure it's 06+

Shouldn't be any surprises

Only changes you may run into would be connectors on various sensors and devices on the engine wiring harness.
Not likely but can happen

Known issues with 4.0l SOHC were the knock sensor wires, getting brittle and breaking
Knock sensor is in the valley under the intake, wires come up and connect to harness plug-in on passenger side valve cover, toward the front

Lower thermostat housing could crack and leak, check "new" engine for signs of coolant under/around that housing

Anytime an engine is out you should change the Rear Main Seal, it's a cheap part, but very hard to get to if it starts to leak when engine is in.

Not too worried about minor connector issues.

Wasn't familiar with the knock sensor wiring issue, so thanks for that one.

Thermostat housing will be swapped to an aluminum one and rear main seal will be done for sure.
Apparently has new water pump and pulleys on it, but will look it over otherwise.

Will also inspect timing chain guides to be safe.
