I bought a 84 Ranger with a 302 for $740 not running thinking it will be an easy ignition fix. I replaced the points and got it to run but after it warmed up it starts to lose oil pressure and knocks. Here's some before pictures of the mess.
it was a wiring nightmare
I had to rebuilt the whole motor which had new parts inside the motor but had it was not balanced and ruin every bearing you can think of and ruin the crankshaft. It is a Mexican block so I am glad. Had the heads shaved, bought forged pistons, roller rockers, .496 cam, double roller chain, heddman headers, Trans Depot motor mounts kit. I'm so upset that that the kit is not a direct bolt-on kit because mine is a pre-92 model and the headers won't let me used my stock starter. But I will keep y'all posted on my build Thanks Jim the freak

On mine I had to use a starter off of a 90's with C-6 and 302. The stock starters would ground out against the header and keep cranking (even with the key off). I think I went with a 92. I also had to wrap the passenger side header, and put a heat shield/wrap on the starter. They still cook a little and I replace one every couple of years, but otherwise I would be replacing one every year.

You did a nice job on that Gen 1. I love mine.

Wow. I think the PO of your truck owned my last B II, or at least helped with the wiring! I ended up tearing everything out and using a Painless generic 18 circuit kit.

Thanks for the tips guys. I always wanted a ranger with a 302 but its not easy like I thought it would be. I am a big mustang fan and had many many mustangs that I could fix in my sleep.:headbang:

Thank you, I just installed a starter from a 95 Mustang in my ranger. It's a mini-torque starter so it slide right in pass the header, I will probably wrap the starter and header just incase. I'm taking the trans dapt motor kit out and put the 87-93 convertible mustangs mounts in and bolt them to the frame. After that I have to mount the mech fuel pump and start the bad boy up.

1991 mustang motor mounts are in.

I bought Trans Dapt motor mount kit thinking they will be easy bolt-on kit but my Ranger is a pre-92 model so I went with the 1991 convertible mustang mounts. The odd thing is that I didn't had to switch sides of the mounts. I bolted the pass mount on the pass side and driver mount on the driver side and cut a slot in the crossmember.

The motor is almost level

I will be selling my Trans Dapt motor mounts kit now

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
theres variance on the left right switch depending on where you want the engine, and whether 4x4 or 2x4.

so...level or not level is one of those variance issues. i rarely get them level as most are efi.

i tend to slot the k member and stud the mount boss at the block.

but plumb level and dead center square is not usually in the cards, nor was it stock.

Plumbed my summit 140gph fuel pump and pressure regulator today. wired my starter. Cleaned up the rat nest of wires it had before. Hopefully will be running soon after I plumbed the oil filter hoses.
