I have a 99 4l that can't breath.
Codes for o2s, MAF, iac, etc. I replace iac, mad, egr and o2s with all new parts. But every time I connect the Maf, it kills the engine. Runs pretty good with it off.
What could be causing this. No vacuum leaks. Tried old and new sensors, cleaned old one. Same results every time. Checked wires and current is good.

My credo
Break it right the first time. Fix it better the next time.
Still sounds like the maf is bad or a vacuum leak. Whenever you unplug it the computer goes into limp and runs the engine off preset parameters. Usually you can tap on the top of the maf sensor with the back end of a screwdriver and if it runs better or worse then it is bad. Do you have a scanner to pull any data from the truck. Spray carb cleaner around all vacuum hoses and intake area while you can get it to stay running and see if the engine dies down. If it does then you have a vacuum leak.

Vacuum leak

I tried spraying the carb cleaner. Didn't make the engine surge. I had one leak before this happened that made the vents not work. Fixed that hose and vents still work. I unplugged the idle air control, the engine had low rpms and would hardly stay running so no extra air was getting in past that. The MAF I have is new and the old one still looks good, both wires are clean and intact

New doesn't mean good. Especially with sensitive electronics like a MAF sensor. This is the exact reason you don't try fix a problem by throwing a bunch parts at it before you've made a definitive diagnosis. Not trying to rag on you or anything but when you replace a ton of parts to solve an unknown problem you now have the added problem of trying to figure out if any of those new parts are bad.

If you picked up a MAF at autozone or any chain store it is COMMON to get faulty electronics. Often even multiple times in a row. But also, your old one may not have even been bad to begin with. See the conundrum?

Before you go any further, post ALL the actual codes you are/were getting. The real numbers, not "a maf code". Theres about 7 just for the maf alone and each one means a completely different problem.

I hope the pic posts. These are the codes. I know the o2 sensors were bad or not connected, we don't have to smog our cars where I live. The egr sensor wasn't connected. The iac is new. Egr and o2s were replaced, iac is new. Old and new maf have wires in tact but both cause the same problem.
A new problem I have is changing the cam synchro. I got a 2 prong sensor, but there was a 3 in the car. I talked to the guy I got it from and he said he put a explorer engine in it, but isn't sure what year, but thinks its a 2000.So far most of the parts are compatable. Tbe old amd new maf look exactly the same and have the same part number on them. I'm hoping the synchro is causing the air/fuel ration to be off and that's why the Maf kills it. I replaced the crankshaft sensor but didn't stop the problems.
It sputter s while driving and rpms go up and down. Sometimes runs great and sometimes won't go more than 30 and stalls without throttle, and sometimes doesn't respond to throttle
