Hi everyone.

Something strange happened to me earlier this week.
I got into my truck to move it in the driveway. It started up just fine.
Later when I tried to move it again... nothing.
Theft light is flashing and gives me code 11. From what I could find so far this code shows up when the transceiver isn't communicating with the PATS module.
It seems that broken wiring is a likely potential culprit.
I'm looking to just buy a transceiver and replace mine. When I called the dealer ship they told me that the system has to be reprogrammed when replacing the part.
Is this true, or is the transceiver just an antenna? Does anyone have experience with this?
I know that the system has to be reprogrammed when either of the control modules is replaced, but couldn't find any info on the transceiver.

So my question is. Can I just swap out the transceiver, or will I have to get the system re-programmed after changing it?

Thanks a lot for any advice.
Olivier

Just swap it out, it is just an antenna, and if the key worked before it will work with new transceiver.

Do you have a 2nd PATS key?
The PATS keys can start to work intermittently

The transceiver is powered so there is a fuse for it, check Fuse #19 in cab fuse box
It has a 4 wire connector, pin 1(black/white) is Ground, pin 2(Red/green) is 12v(key on), pins 3 and 4 are the transmit/receive wires to Computer(PCM)
If possible test ground and voltage before getting new transceiver

Thanks for your reply Ron.
I plan on taking it out today, or tomorrow and check all the wires.
I'll also check for power.
Unfortunately I got only 1 key with the truck when I bought it.
I'll post what I find.

I got the part out no problem and I also measure 12v on the pins coming in through fuse 19.
Is there any way to check or measure is the transceiver is ok?
Or do I just have to buy a new one?
Thanks.

Ok.

So I’m a little stuck.
I want to measure continuity of the two signal wires for the transceiver in the cab.
Does anyone know where they come out so I can check them?
I do have the 12V on the plug with key on, so the transceiver gets power.

Thanks for any help.

Grey wire goes to pin 17 on computer(PCM)
White wire to pin 18 on PCM

I think there is a 4 wire connector for transceivers at base of steering column, you need to pull off covers and lower dash cover

:yahoo:, problem solved.
Thanks to RonD for the pointers.

So here's what happened...
One day the truck starts and after parking it, nothing.
The Theft light just started flashing and throwing a code 11.
This seems to correlate with a B1681 code, but I didn't have a reader to check that. The meaning is that the tranceiver isn't communicating with the PCM.
As Ron pointed out the first things to check were fuses, relays and wiring.
A little tip here is in regards to check the 2 signal wires going to the PCM. Since one end of each wire is under the steering wheel and the other under the hood it's quite difficult to use a voltmeter to measure continuity. Well, just use a small piece of wire and connect the two at the PCM connector and create a loop. Easy then to measure for continuity at the connector under the steering wheel.
In my case everything turned out ok, so I went ahead and bought a new tranceiver at a dealership. These things are not cheaper on the internet. Ever source I found charged a lot for shipping and in the end the cost were the same.
Installing the transceiver takes only 15 minutes and is very easy.

Long story short, the truck started right away and my wife is happy that I can finally move it out of the driveway again. :icon_thumby:

Good work :icon_thumby:

Thanks for the update and FIX

Wrecking yards are a good place to look for these, but there are different models, even in Rangers.
Best to take "yours" out, and with you to match it up, connectors can be different as well as "wand" fitment

I was thinking about going to a junk yard, but I read that it's fairly common that the wires in the transceiver break and cause the problem.
I'm not too confident that a 15+ year old part from a yard isn't all of a sudden fail on me again.
The new one comes with a 1 year warranty and piece of mind that it won't crack because of age any time soon.
I'm glad that it happened in my driveway and not out in the fields, or during a hunting trip in the woods. That would've been a bad day.:shok:
