Just do a rebuild, I know you can adjust the thickness of your clutch packs in the direct drive. Not by much, but a lil. A rebuild will be cheapest too. The 4.0l is your best option for engines too, otherwise your just going backwards. Unless you do a v8 swap. THe 4x4 prolly dont work cuz of the electric motor being dirty, follow the cleaning rules in the tech library, takes 20 minutes.

the 4x4 problems are probably related to the electric shift motor.. probably needs a new bushing stopper in there.

I guess here your chance to put in a manual (M5OD) and a manual shift transfer case. The 4.0 is a good engine, I have one and it leaks oil. But it has 212k on it, so I expect it to leak something. Fix up that engine, it won't let you down.

Hahahaha lol
Yeah don't consider changing the 4.0, not worth it. It's an awesome motor! And the a4ld is stronger then a lot of propel say. I've beat the crap out of mine with non major problems. From towing stuff to rocks and mud... I've done things im sure ford would probably tell me not to with it

Rebuild or by another 4.0 and as far as the a4ld, swap it for a c5, or even better find a c6 heavy bastard, A4ld is a glorified c3, not that great! Tranny is easy to rebuild, I just rebuilt my c5.
