My 95 Ranger 4.0 has check engine light. Runs fine, all systems seem normal. Changed oil & filter and air filter about 400 miles ago. Any likely guesses? Mileage now: 163,877.

Bad gas cap? Or gas cap loose perhaps?

Guess are just guesses.

Get the codes. It knows why it is indicating. I believe 95 is OBD2.

With codes you will narrow it down lots.

Go here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD-II_codes.shtml

Close your eyes, scroll the mouse, and pick one :)

"any guesses".............lol

Darn long list of possibles.
Most auto parts stores read them for free, but WRITE THEM DOWN!!!!
"I think it was................." is the same as guessing

My guess, for the record, would be lean codes, because of a dirty MAF sensor.
Although an EVAP code is better, but already taken

Go get a hand gun. Shoot yourself in the foot.

That will have roughly the same chance of fixing your check engine light as guessing.

The code format for early OBDII stuff is PXXXX, all Xs are numerals, 0000 is not used, 1000 is system check incomplete, this leaves 9997 possible codes (not all of them are used or would apply to your truck), figure an average 10 potential causes for each of them, we will call it 3000 codes used in 95, so 30,000 potential issues.

Like I said, shooting yourself in the foot will be about as effective as guessing. It might be more effective because you will have a gunshot wound on your foot and won't give a flying f*ck about the check engine light.

EDIT: This post is meant to demonstrate the futility of guessing as a diagnostic processes. It is not meant to suggest that anyone should actually go shoot themselves in the foot.

You know, the way the legal system works this disclaimer might need to be at the beginning you know, just because someone might stop reading after the initial suggestion you know and...

It's still there. There is there, I can't be held responsible for stupid things other people do without reading all of the instructions.

Oh I don't know about that.

Ever read all the safety stickers on products these days.
Each one is there because someone tried to sue a company because they were not warned to:
On a chain saw: "Do not try to stop chain with your hand or any body part"
Any body part????

On Washer AND Dryer: "DO NOT put any person in this washer/dryer"

On a curling iron: "For external use only!"

From adsm08: "DO NOT shoot foot to get DTC codes"

You get the feeling sometimes that it pays to be stupid?

Back with my original BII I remember getting a notice about a proposed settlement for a class action lawsuit. The settlement involved a sticker I was supposed to stick to my visor that basically said something like "this vehicle can roll over if you try driving it like a sports car or take it off road" and a flashlight. A flashlight? I guess that is payoff for those years driving at risk because there was no sticker on the visor.

I think I actually did receive a sticker I was supposed to put on the visor, it never made it there. I think that may have been a recall item rather than the settlement. Or maybe I am remembering long.

I know I never got a flashlight tho. Probably because I didn't bother sending in the notice about the settlement or doing anything to be part of the "class". In my opinion Class action suits almost always just favor lawyers while the rest get something the equivalent of that flashlight.

Oh the wonderfully hilarious misquotes attributed to me over the years. I wish I had them all written down somewhere. I could publish a book.

We were just having some fun.
Sometimes people here do help others, but having fun is important too.

Yes, get the code, or codes, and start a new thread for some actual help :)

Suggestion..

I would get the computer read, but common problems that will indicate a engine check light would be emissions control problems that dont really effect the drive. TOP ideas would be EGR problem (carbon build up in intake manifold, easy, clean it) 02 sensors before and after your cat, mass airflow sensor, idle air control valve, evap sensor purge valve...most likely some type of sensor...go to autozone or wherever and get it read for free
