I was wondering if a clutch pedal from a 89-92 style ranger will fit in an 87 ranger. I'm trying to do a manual swap in my 87 ranger but the junkyard doesn't have any first gens

Yes, it will fit. The biggest issue you will run into is that the 88+ pedals are shaped a little different. They don't work with the 2-wire plunger style switch because they don't hit the plunger. If you want a clutch switch you will need to use the later cylinder-style one that clips around the master cylinder's plunger rod.

Completely un educated answer but ignition timing should not matter in any way, but I know idle rpms are set different between auto vs manual.

in the how to section it says to do it but it seems like when i read about how others have done it, they do not do it so im kinda confused. yeah i knew the idle was a little higher which i dont really care about since its really not going to effect anything

Would not worry about the idle speed and it has nothing to do with ignition timing anyway.

The last 4.0 swap I did involved a computer from an automatic, and a 5 speed. It was fine and idled normally. Check engine light was on and codes for torque converter lockup solenoid and 3-4 shift solenoid were present at all times but that was to be expected.

FWIW I have also put an automatic behind a 4.0 and used a 5 speed computer - it was also just fine although it was a C5, thus there was no need for the computer to know any different... for all it knows, it still has a manual behind it.
