I have a 1991 ford ranger 4x4 extended cab 4x4 5 speed with the 4.0 we yanked the motor and replaced it with a v2203. runs good however I can only make about 75 miles per hour. I was wondering if any rangers differentials would swap with mine to get a higher gear ratio or if im just going to have to suck it up and buy new ring and pinion gears for the front and back. thanks for the help.

Depends. What ratio do you have?

Remember to do front and rear if you wanna use 4x4

If you can get pics of the door tag and the axle tags we should be able to help you figure out your gearing.

My question is this though:

What are you doing that you need to go faster than 75 with a Ranger?

I am still confused about the need for something above 65.

Well considering the speed limit in the states I've been to is usually 75......

Besides, speed can be fun. Maybe he wants to have fun sometimes.

Hell I cruise backroads (gravel) at 75 quite often.

Saying you have no need to go more than 65 is just ridiculous. Maybe you don't have that need, but many others do.

Dude, mine gets a bit hairy at 70. And no, I do not have any front end problems.

Speed is fun, but too much is dangerous.

I drive highways that are 75 mph to college like 7 hours the whole way and 70mph to work. The lower rpms my motor is turning the better. Its no power house. so anything to create less strain is good. its not necessarily to go faster, just lower mpg and improve fuel consumption. ill have numbers off the axle soon, my buddy is gunna run over and get them

too much speed would not by any means be considered 65. I would put too much in a ranger around 110+

my truck handles my gravel roads just fine at 80 MPH. there are a few i have to slow down for due to ruts/holes, but theres a few that are better than a lot of our highways up here. so those i can run safely at 60-80 mph. i dont care if your truck gets squirly on your gravel roads. Mine doesnt.

ditto. i actually just did a high speed test run on an abandoned air strip near my place (town died, they had a crop duster airport) i managed to get up to 180 km/h (111 MPH) before running out of room. this was on a mostly smooth asphalt runway, but had some bumps in it so it was a little rough at higher speeds. my tires are rated for 112 mph.

it was still climbing in speed, although slowly. and it was a tad sketchy. i woulda pushed it farther if i had more room though.

Whatever floats y'all boat. Lol
Just be smart and aware of what you're doing... Like using an airstrip and not a street.

However, at 80 on a gravel road there is NO way you could avoid an accident if someone/thing is in the road when you round a corner... Braking would my main concern.

Hmmm. I can't figure it out.
What's the axle code on the door sticker?
If the fronts been gutted, how do we know the rear wasn't regeared?
