Just wanting some general input from everyone on how you flag your cargo whenever it is overly long or wide?

What do you typically use?
How do you attach it?
How much do you let hang before you decide to flag?
If you never flag, even when you should, why don't you?

Thanks to everyone that lends me a little advice

What do you typically use? Red 12" x 12" cloth or plastic flag
How do you attach it? Screwed or duct taped to wood/duct taped to metal
How much do you let hang before you decide to flag?Must flag at 3' feet past tailgate/optional 1 foot over sides
If you never flag, even when you should, why don't you? I always do

I recently hauled a four row planter home. It has reflectors all over it, I stuck a magnetic LED blinking amber light on the far left side row unit and snuck home on gravel at half the speed of smell (10mph, any faster and it would get to bouncing terrible and I didn't want to blow a tire) I would say it worked great if I had seen another soul on the whole hour and a half trip.

I love the magnetic light, I use it on all sorts of farm equipment. It is easy to just slap on and go. It is super bright and the batteries last forever.

8' long stuff doesn't stick out of my bed on my Ranger, I can put pipe or trim in it diagonally and it fits perfectly. Because it is wider it is also the same story in my '150 with the 6.5' box on my F-150. Never hauled any 10 or 12 footers, I used a trailer on the 20' 1" PVC I used for the water line for my house.

typically I just use the correct trailer for the load... unless it's just 2x4's or something and then I do what Doorgunner said. Red 12x12 flag, usually stapled on

I hauled ladders and equipment for my siding business for 25 years. I never learned the rules until after the business was shut down. The above posters are correct but in those 25 years I only got pulled over once by cops and it was for speeding. They gave me a warning because my straps were old and didn't have legible load ratings sewn onto the straps....who knew I needed that? What it comes down to is if you are a licensed business you are supposed to know the rules. Even if you aren't told when you get the business license you are responsible. I worked for 20 of the 25 years as a proprietor which means unlicensed business so the fines are a lot less than a licensed business. The fine I could have got for the straps was over $1000.00.....I went and bought new right away.

I've found one of those magnetic lights on the side of the road and with a little repair am using it myself, but I won't trust just the magnet, I tape it as well.

For a flag, I'll use anything if I don't have a proper one, a shirt, a plastic bag, whatever. I used red 2" tuck tape many times, folded over on itself so there was a "tail" flapping behind for about three feet. I figured that was more likely to be noticed by someone following and therefor safer. I don't know how legal it was tho. Like I implied, I never got pulled over for improper flagging in 25 years, but I also put in an effort to have something to warn people.

More important, IMO, is how the load is secured. I have lost a few things over the early years and learned pretty quick what was needed and what wasn't. Always take the time to tie down a load, even if you are just going around the corner.....trust me on this!

My great uncle had a big fiberglass ladder get blown out of his truck on the interstate, it slid like a ski for what seemed like forever. He pulled over to retrieve it. As he was walking up to it a semitruck splattered it all over the place. The truck didn't stop. He was there picking up the pieces when traffic would let him when a state trooper pulled up, flipped on his lights and awarded him with a littering ticket and then left. He thought it would have at least been nice to run the lights to let people know there was a hazard in the roadway.

He was really mad over it, he was risking great harm to himself cleaning it up and still got a ticket. He is hiliarious when gets to ranting about it. :icon_rofl:

Yeah, some cops are stupid! Your uncle was cleaning up the mess he made and I'm sure had already learned his lesson....no need to add salt to the wound. However, that story being told may have saved someone else from doing the same thing so maybe the cop wasn't so stupid after all. It would have been real easy for your uncle to just drive off and he didn't, kudos to him.

My old truck had a headache rack so I tried to run things from the tailgate forward whenever I could, just had to remember to strap things to it.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Would any of you ever used, or seen for sale, something more permanent for flagging cargo, instead of just using a rag or plastic flag or something you will just have to throw away at some point?

Something along the lines of an adjustable strap with a flag attached to it?

Up here you can buy a proper sized flag that is "permanent" at any truck stop. There are holes along the edge same as a tarp that you can use for the "best for you" attachment method, be it strap, bungee, tie wire, bubble gum, etc.

I use a red thong I found on the sidewalk in Williamsport.

I just tie it on there.

Actually, I don't flag. I rarely carry anything large enough to need it, and on the rare occasion that I do I usually end up putting it on a trailer instead.
