Install old ECM and use a jumper on fuel pump relay to see if the used ECM is the problem.

Jumper is used on the OBD1 connector
It is usually between power booster and fender well by firewall, just hangs from main harness, also seen it in similar location but on passenger side.

Look here for diagram: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.shtml

Fuel pump slot is labelled in diagram, that slot connects to the ECM wire that Grounds Fuel Pump Relay to close it.
So use a jumper from that slot to a Ground, when key is turned on fuel pump relay should close a fuel pump should come on.

My opinion...

Just do as RonD says. Take it step by step.

Very very hard for timing chain to jump a tooth, never even heard of that happening on a 2.9l

If valve timing is off("jumped tooth"), then that will lower compression, engine would still run OK, no missing, but would be sluggish for power.

You can check vacuum level at idle, 17"-21" would be OK, less could mean low compression, so compression test would be next.

Check the vacuum hose on the Fuel Pressure Regulator(FPR), if FPR is leaking that vacuum hose will have fuel inside it and it would be sucked into engine causing engine to run rich and stumble.
