As an old geezer who really should know better I've done the unbelievable, Topping up the power steering I find I've picked up the wrong bottle from the shelf and poured in Dot3 brake fluid....

I've pumped out what I can reach but what now?

Do I simply pop the line, drain all the mixed fluid and top it up, or will it need to be flushed first ?

Any input welcome

Seems about right. Short of having a bucket full of Mercon V in one bucket with the intake hose and the output hose in the other, Not sure you could flush the system out any better.

I wouldn't worry about it. Both are hydraulic fluid. Brake fluid can be used in some power steering systems, and I believe some even call for it. The reverse is NOT true though. Power steering fluid can't be used in the brake system because brake fluid requires a higher boiling point.

Just drain or suck out what you can get, and fill it back up with fresh power steering fluid.

Yeah, brake fluid in the PS is not nearly the disaster that PS fluid/ATF in the brake system is.

In fact it was an old timer's trick to pour a little DOT3 into the trans if it was slipping.

Disaster averted !!

Sincere thanks to all who proffered advice.

A hand pump from Harbor Freight did the trick (altho' of course I dropped a tiny part into the engine compartment and had to make a temp version with tape!)

Fresh (correct) fluid and she's right as rain!
