OK, I think the next major upgrade to the Bronco is going to be a transmission swap. I have the crap A4LD auto, that I think is starting to suffer after 120,000 miles, and I'm looking to swap in an M5OD-R1 Manual transmission!!! And also do the 4.0 clutch upgrade!

I went to the local JY and they have a few M5ODs from 4.0 explorers, and I think a few from 2.9 rangers. They want $200 regardless of whether or not I get it out of a 2.9 or a 4.0. I'm sure you guys are tired of people asking about this swap and what is needed to do it. I have read tons of threads and I think I have found all the parts that will work for this swap.

Here is a list of parts

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-MU116-1/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-50-724/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MCI-N3240/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DHB-CS37897/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DHB-CM350070/

My main question is, will all of these parts work for swapping in a 4.0 clutch into a 2.9 with an M50D-R1 Tranny??

Also will my T-case bolt to the back of the M5OD tranny? I'm not sure what it is, all I know right now is that it's an electric shit.

Thanks

Well you will need the clutch pedal as well..... but looks like you have it all there.
And yes your transfer case (1350E) will bolt up to any m50d out of a 4x4 ranger or explorer.

You might also want to get the wiring harness off a 4.0 that runs from the solenoid to the starter. I had to get one when I did my M5od swap.

What about the computer? Don't you need a replacement one so the current one doesn't freak out about shift points from the auto? Or is it possible to just take those wires out and run new ones for the manual?

The A4LD is not computer controlled

I guess I'll have to pick one up if I can find one. Can I grab one from any 2.9L with a manual trans?? I read that I didn't have to change the ECM. Oh well that's why I started this thread to find out what was true and what wasn't.

Thanks:icon_thumby:

You also need the clutch hydraulic hose. I would order all that from RockAuto, you will get the same stuff and probably cheaper.

Do you already have the pedals? I have the whole assembly if you need it - as well as two good manual trans ECMs - PM me if you are interested

I actually just got back from the local JY and the have a clutch/brake pedal assembly inside a first gen ranger. What is so great about that you ask?? Well, the dash and everything around it is already out of the truck. All I have to do is unbolt it and it will come right out!!:headbang::headbang: But I'm going to wait until tmrw to get it. I need my buddy to hold the wrench on the other side ot the firewall so I can get the main bolts out.:headbang:

Also, how hard is it to wire up the backup lights? and there is one more sensor on the trans. I'm not sure what this is. Is it the neutral sense switch??? If it is how do I hook that up, if needed.

thanks

you need to change the ecu or the motors rpms wont drop between shifts
not true. I put a 1993 4.0 in my bII. Engine had an auto behind it. I used a
m5od with it and used the auto ECU. Had no problems with it. RPMs dropped on every shift.

The manual ECU has a better program and won't set off the engine light when you don't shift when it wants you too.
