I own a 2003 Ranger edge 2wd 3.0L v6 with a 5 speed transmission. Recently, with the truck in gear and ascending downhill, I could hear a winding noise, but with the clutch engaged or shifter in neutral, the winding noise was not present. Next if I shifted anywere above 4000rpm, it would whine prior to shifting, and now I have absolutly no power above 4000rpm, if I press the gas pedal more while in any gear to go above 4000rpm, a loud clicking noise gets louder and faster. Hopefully this description is descriptive enough for a diagnosis, thanks for the help! -Danny

I think you have more than one problem.

1. High RPM detonation. It's an engine management problem with a number of potential causes. There are a number of other possibilities, but almost all of them are in the engine.

2. Low-lubricant syndrome in the transmission. The damage has been done, and the transmission probably needs replacement.

Note that your transmission doesn't affect power. If it slips, it is D E A D and it will never move again.
