FWIW...everyone acts like the HD is gold..its just an R1 with extra holes in the case for a VSS and a bell housing bolt. Same ratios, same gears, same everything inside..well the output shaft has a groove and dimple for the snap ring and stake on the VSS tone ring...but as far as being better than an R1...myth.

Now that I have the major components for this project coming my way I'm getting anxious to get started on this change over even though I was actually going to wait until spring.

UpDate!

I need to stop posting all over the forum but it's hard to get answers from one thread with all the questions in one place.
Anyways.. starting my photo "journal" of this swap :icon_rofl:

62,000 on the OD.. great find! Not sure about using the newer 4.0 just yet.

We pulled the components apart! the clutch looks new! (will still replace it)

The T-case DID NOT WANT TO COME OFF! but I persevered and won with small thin chisels between the joint. the corrosion was awful as you can see.

The weather is perfect to do this work but I still allot of things to get for this swap. Hopefully I'll have the pedal assembly coming soon. still need/want the manual PCM and under dash wiring.
So.. This may have to wait until spring. :headbang:

Happy I found this thread, Excellent information!
I am about to undertake the same swap with my 3.0l 4x4 I just picked up on the cheap.. I cant stand HP robbing slushbox auto's and this one is just plain goofy on the shift points lol.
I finally found the 3.0 M5OD from a 4x4.. That combination is a damn unicorn around these parts!

Please keep the updates coming, great work man! :icon_thumby::icon_thumby::icon_thumby:

The one recommendation I'll make at this point is DO NOT buy a used flywheel for a 4.0.

If you buy a used one for however much you will need to have it resurfaced (ground)

The cost of having one surfaced is actually only a few dollars cheaper than getting a SHINY NEW flywheel (In OEM packaging) from Rockauto...

I personally will never again have a flywheel resurfaced or buy a used one...
