‘93 Ranger Clutch install Gone Bad

Nothing like watching a “pro” mechanic mangle new parts ....this is why I do my own work 90% of the time. In this case, its a clutch job on my 4x4 which necessitates a lift, etc. Will absolutely never use these asshats in the future. Its been painful to watch and costly, probably going to wind up in small claims

That went a lot like one of my 5 year old's stories.

I know something happened, I know it was worth telling someone about, I know the story teller wasn't happy about what happened, but I don't really understand what did happen.

Also, you don't need a lift to do a clutch. I've done five or six on my back on the floor over the last 10 years, one on a Geo Storm. I lift is nice for that job, but it can be done without one.

1993 was a change over year for Rangers 1st year of 2nd generation
Ford changed the clutch quick connect fitting so I would get master/slave as a set to make sure they match

Also when a shop did my 1994 clutch they goofed up and reversed the O2 sensor plug-ins, when they dropped the exhaust pipes
(this can happen on any year since O2 plug-ins are "universal" for the most part)
Never had a CEL on this truck the whole time I owned it

Test drive was fine, then on the drive home the engine warmed up and O2s were used..............lol
Started running like crap, then CEL came on
Lean on one bank, Rich on the other??

Cold it ran perfect, and warmed up at idle or WOT(wide open) it ran fine, but not in between
Only 1 wire color difference between the two O2s, swapped connectors and all was well again

Shop said they would investigate the problem, and would have to charge me for it, because it would have to have been a previous issue, since it "couldn't" be related to changing the clutch out....................
I called them and told them what happened, seemed to fall on deaf ears, I don't think they believed me, but I was talking to front office guy not a mechanic
They did a good job on the clutch so no complaints there

At 60, and without a level driveway- no thanks- been there done that. In this case, a shop owner, without a number 2 and a few ok mechanics. Truck went in on Monday at 7am with promise it would be done by 5pm- Today is Thursday- of course, if he was actually here and not everywhere but here it would have helped.

You mad about broken parts or the job taking too long or what?

I haven't been this confused since bentwrench was around.

Too long, owner ( the head wrench) is a flake- did not listen to my gut on this one

I was happy with quote of 600.00 + for the labor- I supplied Luk flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pilot, etc along with oem clutch master and slave TO bearing and rear seal. Also replaced all 3 ujoints in driveline with greasable joints and had zerk installed at slip yoke so I can grease easily in the future. The lesson here is listen to your gut- this shop owner may know his stuff but is a straight up flake with some ADD issues- his focus is everywhere and no where as he comes and goes without talking to his team. You can’t pay people enough these days to do a professional job- rant over, it would have been worth more to pay more and be in and out. Never again - frankly, I hate it when I am forced to use a mechanic to work on my truck. Too many flakes out there these days -

Yes i agree, there are a lot of questionable ability wrench pullers out there. I will be the first to admit that I am not really good at the newer computer controlled everything vehicles, but as far as this little pickup is concerned, I am going to try to do everything I can myself. It is a basic vehicle and not overly complicated so I do feel comfortable working on it. Lots of good advice here.
