Will the speedometer cable work in the vss port on the t-case housing? I believe they use the same gears don’t they?

Yes, same setup on transfer cases up to 1997, same Drive worm gear, driven gear is the one you change to match ratio and tire size to 8,000ppm VSS or speedometer cable
