Under the dash, to the right of the column is a little thumb wheel, it can be used to adjust the needle.

The needle is on a nylon cable that is hooked to the shifter on the column. The cable can stretch or time, since it is about the same gauge as 5lb fishing line and attached to a spring that keeps it under constant tension.

I believe there is also an adjustment where the cable attaches to the transmission - you pry out a retaining clip, then move the cable. I have done it before and there was is a procedure listed in the shop manual for being in a specific gear when you do it.

There is, but that procedure is reserved for cable replacement, and still requires the needle be fine tuned at the end.

That is more of a "Ok I counted 3 clicks on the shifter, (should be drive) but the truck definitely went backwards" kind of adjustment.

Or for when the truck won't start in Park/Neutral.

Well yes, but that kind of misalignment usually results in the same kind of thing that I referenced too.
