although i am assuming they are different, i will ask; is the TFI on a v-6 different than a TFI on a 4 cylinder?
the u-pick site lists inventory but not what motor is in the wrecks. 2 mid 90's aerostars are listed so i am hoping. if either is a v-6 i will go for the heat sink and remote wiring. and the dist if i can get at it.
somewhat related question; if i follow the wiring from the dist, like by cutting the tape that wraps the harness, where will the connector from the TFI go?

and another question; is the dist the same in 3.0 as in a 2.9? what about the 4.0 dist? if there is a remote TFI, then the dist should not have that cut out in the side
the 2 aerostars are 96's

All TFI modules are the same for the number of cylinders. So all 4-cyls, all 6-cyls, and all 8-cyls.

2.9 and 3.0 dis are not the same.

What 4.0 distributor?

Not sure the TFI module would care about the number of cylinders.
Doesn't really matter to "points" if there are 4, 6 or 8 humps in distributor shaft.

And TFI module is the "points" and centrifugal advance, computer did "vacuum advance"(SPOUT).
Hall effect sensor IN the distributor takes the place of the "points" but doesn't directly control the coil to spark, so TFI module is the "points", electrically, lol.

So I would think any distributor mounted TFI module would work to replace any other distributor mounted TFI module, number of spark plug wires on that distributor shouldn't/wouldn't matter

But just surmising, never had issues with my older Rangers, TFI module wise, so never put that to the test

It does. The calibration is different between them.

went to the u=pick. both 96 aerostars were 3.0. no heat sink visible anywhere. 97 in the shade...not a spot of shade anywhere to be seen!
wasted $3. oh well.
in the morning i'm looking at an 89 2.9 ranger. wont have the remote stuff but will have the wiring i need.

finally did the remote tfi thing. got a computer heat sink and mounted it to the battery shelf so it is in the airflow around the edge of the radiator. had to cut the tape on the harness and reroute the wires from the distributor due to 2 wires that go deeper into the main harness.
ran for about 30 minutes and died. heat sink and tfi were cool to the touch.
after sitting for a while, i realized i was NOT hearing the fuel pump when i turned on the key. when i finally DID hear the pump, the truck started right up.
there are only 3 relays under the hood so i will turn the key on and disconnect each until i don't hear the pump, then change that one

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
you better pull the sending unit connector and inspect for corrosion.

A lot late to this thread, but I have swapped computers from the 2.9 and 4.0 and ran them on my 4.0 with no problems. I do not know if that means anything to this idea of swapping the TFI on the 2.9 engine setup to a EDIS of a 4.0 though. I ran a manual 2.9 computer on the manual 4.0 setup and I ran a automatic 4.0 computer on the manual 4.0 setup and I could find no differences. I had wondered at that time, several years ago, if those 2 computers were compatible.
