I have an 86 BroncoII 2.9 4X4 with a blown rear end. I believe it is just the ring and pinion gears but have options for replacement. 1. just ring and pinion 2.posi unit as a whole with ring and pinion gears attached 3.complete axle assembly. I have never opened a rear end like this but am not mechanically retarded, I am wondering if someone who has done this before could give me advice as to what will be the easiest to replace. I have a garage shop with a good amount of tools but no lift. Thanks

Duh!

I would find an explorer 8.8 and weld the perches on top or find a replacement rear end with the correct gearing. Would be a lot easier

Yeah, sounds like the best option. Explorer axle with the right gearing.

Replacing the ring/pinion is a very precise procedure, and if you F*** it up, you'll trash the new back end.

Plus the explorer axle is way stronger. And easier to find good replacement parts for. And you can get a spool for one... The reasons go on.
