The older trucks used the speedometer on the transfer case that's a given that I understand, the newer four wheel drive systems use electronic not going to the T-case

I'm looking at the newer 1998 transfer case I have. The casting has the place for the mechanical speedometer gear sensor insert it's either plugged or not completely drilled out.

How do you access the speedometer drive gear on an older transfer case? I think I saw a thread somewhere on another forum that it involves removing the flange, seal and bearing?

I can't seem to even give away to 1998 transfer case so I'm going to get my friend to help me take it apart but I want to start by trying to determine if the output shaft will accept the parts needed for the mechanical speedometer drive, I'm guessing yes.

To get at the gear all you need to do is remove the rear output flange and seal. The worm gear just slides off then.

It actually can't be accessed from inside the case at all.

Adsm, Thanks! Looking at the casting, the hole is over an inch deep and it seems like the very bottom is capped plugged or undrilled and I know a couple of Machinists...

Next question is, how do I get those particular parts I know the speed sensor is made by Dorman how about the driven gear, clip and I think there's a little ball bearing under the clip?

Speed gears are easy to get, they didn't change. My mom's 64.5 Mustang uses the same one our trucks do. Last time I bought one it was $5 or so at the dealer.

Speed sensor is readily available.

The worm gear I am not sure of, I do know a ball bearing attaches it to the shaft.

on the newer non-speedo tcases there is a sleeve in place of the worm gear. it easily slides right off.

I should mention the ball bearing is not there for in/out attachment, the flange keeps it from moving in and out. The ball bearing keeps it attached and spinning.

I understand. never having seen it myself by will sometime in the near future.

Indent spring and ball. this is for a T5 but guessing it's something like this.

I need to find out if the shaft has a hole just for that! Knowing mfgs can drill one less hole ands save million$ on production runs So I don't expect a no speedo gear T-case will have a shaft like that already in there. Only one way to find out! Guess it could be drilled by a machinest also. but then it would all get expensive.
Thanks A!

oops on the photo size! eek

I don't know if it is sprung. That is usually reserved for something that is interned to be fully retained by the ball. This one is just there to give the worm gear something to grab. There is a groove the whole way through the inner sleeve, so it doesn't need to be able to drop.

there may be a bit of a problem,,,,
I have a '99 tcase apart and the output shaft where the speedo worm gear would go is smooth. no splines or keyways. unless the worm gear is press fit, or squashed between the flange and something it won't be driven.
never had a speedo tcase apart, so I don't know what drives those worm gears.

the hole does not have a plug at the bottom, it's part of the casting.

I posted it like 6 times. It's a ball bearing.

Yeah, like that, I have a couple of them on hand, and like 4 different speedo gears... I could play with them some to get my speedo closer and I think I have the gears for it but never got that far...
