I'm looking in to ordering parts to re-gear my 8.8" axle in my V8 swap truck and I want to make sure I order the right parts the first time..

I swapped an 8.8" 31 spline axle from an FX4 LVL II Ranger in to my 87 Ranger 5.0 2wd street truck. It has the 4.10 gears and Torsen locker as expected.. I'm trying to get my highway rpm down some, increase my mileage a tad bit, and also make 1st gear in my T5Z a little more usable.

I need to re-gear to a 3.73 but I seem to be getting conflicting info on the pinion spline count when shopping for gears.

It shows the pinion spline count as 28 splines in the chart halfway down the page here: https://www.therangerstation.com/stock-ranger-specifications/ford-ranger-rear-axles/

I was looking at 3.73 gears and I want to stick with the Ford Racing brand. So while shopping for the best prices on them, I found these but they list the pinion spline count at 30 splines: https://www.jegs.com/i/Ford-Performance/397/M-4209-88373/10002/-1

This install kit is what I'll be using as I'd like to use the high torque pinion bearing: https://www.jegs.com/i/Ford-Performance/397/M-4210-B2/10002/-1

Because everyone likes pictures lol

I went out to the garage and counted the pinion splines on the old 3.73:1 gear I took out of the '99 Explorer 8.8" axle that is now under my BII:

Indeed it is 30 splines.

Thanks, I will forward this error as well to Jim.

Also, the ring gear bolt & bearing cap torque is wrong there as well (both should be 85 ft-lbs, or "70-85" according to my FSM).

Thanks for responding. I appreciate the confirmation.

Ford only used two spline counts and they were 28 and 31 splines. Hope this helps

You are talking about axle shafts. They are talking about the pinion flange.

I fixed it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

This is why The Ranger Station is my #1 resource for my beloved little trucks..

I recommend this website several times a year to more people than I could count.

When I was working at Advance I would recommend this site to anyone with Ranger issues, and so many of them said they already knew about it and were members or had been following tech articles in the library.

I also make sure to wear my TRS gear any time I'm at a major car-related thing, especially a Ford thing. And I have the Harrisburg Auto Show (but haven't been in a few years) and Carlisle auto shows right here in my back yard.

I might ditch Ford Carlisle this year and go to Lancaster Air Show instead. I really wish they weren't always on the same weekend so I could do both. I also wish I didn't have a crazy ex who is one of the reenactors for Lancaster so I didn't have to worry about being murdered while there.

Weird thing here. Everything I'm looking at on Rockauto is still showing a 28 spline pinion shaft. From a 92 Mustang, 92 F150, 2003 Ranger, 96 V8 Explorer, all under the 8.8" axle section.. I guess I'll have to order the ring/pinion set from somewhere else to be sure.

I'll bet that whomever wrote that was thinking axle instead of pinion.

Randy's I think is where the bearing cap and ring bolt torque errors came from (at least that is where I first saw them).

I've seen several reports of 8.8" ring bolts backing out in use.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Going from 4.10's to 3.73's is only a 9% rpm decrease, is that enough to do what you want.
