Still waiting for my sending unit. But the fuel gauge appears to be working. I filled the tank up and have drove about 37 miles and it looks like its down just below full now. I still need to remove bed and change filler neck this weekend but having second thoughts about changing the sending unit. What do you guys think? Should i change it or just keep the sending unit on the shelf and wait for the thing to act up again?

The original sending unit can last the life of the truck, not all that many posts about them failing, fuel pump yes, but not so many of the sending units.

So hard choice since you are pulling the bed anyway, new doesn't always mean better these days, new now means "never tested", lol.
If it was an OEM sender then I might just swap it out, after market sender would give me pause, just like you seem to have.
Trust your gut feeling.

Well took the bed off again just a few minutes ago and change the filler neck hose assy and put bed back on. Took a few pic's so i hope i can get them uploaded. Also attached a file with the wiring diagram for the instrument panel to sending unit. The filler hose had several cracks in the hose and every time i filled up with gas i could smell it for a while.

So I've been reading this thread for about an hour now. Trying to figure everything out, and I am at a crossroads. I tested my sending unit, and it read 16 Ohms with the float all the way down and 152 Ohms with it raised. So I think my sending unit is good, I even hooked up a new one just to test and it did not affect the gauges. But if I disconnect the fuel pump the gauge shoots to full, and drops to empty if I reconnect it. Where can I go to try and fix this problem?

solved, previous owner failed to reconnect a connection under the hood.
