A 5.3L is tempting, even 6.0L... they are cheap reliable power... I have a buddy with a 5.3L in a 80's Jimmy, cam but otherwise mostly stock, giant turbo set up for E85 with an Explorer 8.8 in the back, I think it's around 10 seconds in the quarter...

Yeah, if I had a 2wd truck to dink around with as a project I'd be tempted to try one of the newer small block Chevy engines.

The IFS trucks are drivers side drop, and occasionally you find a manual transfer case...

97-03 F-150 had the 4406, not sure what the later ones used.
