I was given a 87' bronco 2 yesterday..... no starter installed on it. Push started it runs fine. Was told the previous owner rebuilt the engine and it is now missing the starter plate. My buddy that gave me the truck said he went through a starter in a very short time....... Do I need the starter plate? or can I make a new starter work somehow? I don't even know what the plate looks like or where it goes. Any help is appreciated. Thanks:headbang:

The inspection plate locates the starter, it is necessary. It goes inbetween the engine and transmission. From what I remember as far as my auto, the flex plate will need to be removed to install - pretty much going to have to pull the engine or drop the transmission and try to deal with it under the truck.

I had the same problem with my ranger, i replaced 3 in 3 weeks. I finally ended up removing the 9 tooth and swapping in a ten tooth starter drive in a new starter and its been working perfectly for about 1 1/2 months now. I dont have the trans sight plate installed on mine either.
