Will a starter Part# sa-776-rm fit on a 87 2.9. I think the starter is for a 90 2.9.

o.k. looks like it will bolt up but has a solenoid on it, not on the fender, so no go.

Ok, here is what you do.

Screw the 2.9 starter.

Buy one for a 1991 Explorer with AUTOMATIC transmission. That is key, a manual trans starter won't fit.

Then get a long double ended battery cable.

Install the Explorer starter (it will have a solenoid, don't worry about it). Move your current starter wire to the other big post of the fender solenoid and hook it to the little terminal on the new starter.

Then take the new battery cable you bought, put it in the location of the original starter wire and run it to the large post on the new starter.

Bingo, you just upgraded to a stronger, lighter starter. Took you 20 minutes.

That starter cross references to FORD EXPLORER (1991 - 1996) 4.0L automatic.

Fit note: OHV, Automatic Transmission
This product fits the following Ford Explorer submodels

1993-1996: Limited; 6 Cyl 4.0L;
1991-1996: Eddie Bauer; 6 Cyl 4.0L;
1991-1996: Sport; 6 Cyl 4.0L;
1991-1996: XL; 6 Cyl 4.0L;
1991-1996: XLT; 6 Cyl 4.0L;
1995-1995: Expedition; 6 Cyl 4.0L;

+1 just change up the wiring. Top is how it is now, bottom is what you want w/ that starter.

Just my luck. I had thought about changing the wires, but did not since it was over 100 bucks, and was not sure. I already took it back, but picked up the 2.9 starter and alternator. Now for a IAC cleaning or a new one, after that I will put the A.C back on. At that point everything on the engine will be new, including the engine. Rolled 1000 miles today. I will go with the other starter next time. Thanks for the info.:icon_cheers:
