How many years do you have with your dept?, how long have you been in your profession?, etc, etc. tell us a lil about your self.

I'm 28, I work for the second largest fire dept in the nation, CalFire. I'm a full time, but seasonal Fire Fighter I. We're a all risk dept. a Meaning I can be dispatched to a MVA, a medical call, a commercial fire, a chem spill, a wildland fire, etc. this is the beginning of my 7th season fire season. I usually get laid off in October or November then hired back on in May or June because our fire season usually runs June-the end of October. This year has been weird due to the drought and we've had fires all winter long. We got hired back early this year.
Our hiring process is extremely competitive and to promote takes a refi cupolas amount of certifications to be even acnowledged. Also a AS degree and a class B driver license is just about a must to promote above the FF level. I'm in the process of trying to get all the certs and licènses I need to become a full time perminant engineer.

I'm in my 24th year with the Georgia Dept. of Corrections (the "chain gang"). During my time with them, I've been a dorm officer, a detail (outside on the road) officer, transfer officer, Assistant Fire Chief, right to know coordinator, key and tool management specialist, hazardous materials specialist, fire, life, and safety coordinator, a field training officer, and am currently working in plant operations. Apparently, I can do everything. Or at least they think so ......

There are things I've seen that I can't 'un-see', and things I wish I could forget.

I hate to ask...but now I have to. Assuming you'll answer, can you give an example?

Sure I'll answer. Some of the things I've seen that I wish I could forget include the body of a driver that was pulled from the wreckage of his car and placed on a stretcher. As we were transferring him to the waiting ambulance, his torso literally split open. Or pulling an 8 yr old boy from the car his dead father was still in and hurrying him to the ambulance only to have him die before they could leave the scene. Or the inmate taken out of the back gate in an ambulance with his brain oozing down the side of his face.

Things I can't "unsee" would include the first time I walked in on two inmates playing 'hide the salami', or seeing one of them eat their own feces ...... or someone elses. Yep. That's the reality of prison. That's just a few. I could, and maybe someday will, write a book.

14 years in the fire dept, with just about every possible fire and emergency management cert you can think of, hazmat tech, fire chief for 6 years, retired in 2011 due to not wanting to deal with/fight politics of a small county anymore...

RangerSVT, I feel you on the politics. I can't stand it, either. It mucks up an otherwise perfectly good job.

........ and as to the "SVT" ... would you be referring to 'Ampeg'? just curious.

I've been accumulating parts for the last 4 BII's in my yard for the last 6 or 7 years. I've parted out 6 Explorers and 4 FSB's in that time. Last year I finished my 40x60 shop. I'm gonna build stuff!!!!!!!!
