If you're not going to be using the a/c just take everything out. It's just in the way.

Also what about the smog pump I took the rubber hoses off and don't know how to go about plugging the metal line by the back of the valve cover

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
The heat is separate. There are 2 heat exchangers in the ductwork in your can. One is the A/C evaporator coil and the other is the heater core. If all you do is remove A/C stuff. That will have no affect on the heat.

How am I supposed to know if I'm asking it
I am trying to encourage critical thinking. All cars have heat. Not all cars have air conditioning. So by that logic if you remove the air conditioning parts the heat should still work.

Also, if the air conditioning is already non-functional but the heat still works, then it can be concluded that removing the air conditioning components should be ok.

Go whole hog and wipe out as much of it as you can. Remove the plastic housing the blower motor mounts two, take off the access panel and pull the evaporator too and reinstall it. It will move a lot of air (especially if yours was like mine and plugged up with dirt/debris) OR get a airbox from a non-a/c truck. It will take up much less space in the engine bay (aka easier access to #3 spark plug) and look nicer.

The pipe was plugged on mine before I got it, IIRC the PO used a large bolt in a hose. Come up with something cleaner. I remember I used a non A/C PS belt for the alternator side (so both belts were the same) and it fit perfectly.

Check your vacuum, you may have a leak that is messing with the vacuum booster. Or you may need a booster. Troubleshoot everything, don't just throw parts at it.

Look at the lines one at a time and figure out where they go. An '85 2.8 will have a ton of them if it's still running the stock feedback setup. You may want to hop on eBay and buy an '85 EVTM guide.
