So I removed the bed on my Mazda to swap out the fuel tank/pump only to find two alien devices on top of the fuel tank (circled red in the pic). I've never seen anything like them, so I a haven't a clue as to what they are. Anyone know what these devices are and what purpose they serve? Finally, will they also need to be replaced?

They look like they are hooked into the evap tubing? Carbon canisters?

I was wondering that too but it almost looks homemade.
I've never seen anything like it, and I've been under an 86,87 and 91 Ranger bed.

Welcome to TRS :)

For sure EVAP system parts

Charcoal Canister should be in engine bay, that hose with "?" would connect to it

The two boxes could just be vapor storage so over filling gas tank won't get liquid fuel into the hose going to the Canister, and yes probably added after the fact because of problems, so looks homemade, but at Mazdas "home", lol.

Looks like the higher hose on each Box is connected to the Canister hose and the lower hose to the gas tank, so fuel could drain back into the tank if overfilled
And the Boxes allow the EVAP system air space, with an over filled tank, so it can work, pass emissions tests :)

But just guessing

Yeah, your guess is better than mine (I haven't one). They are factory canisters, however, because the replacement fuel tank is designed with them in mind. When I have a moment, I'll run out and follow the line I marked with "?" and see if it is indeed connected to a charcoal canister. I've been unable to find replacement canisters, so I guess replacement is out of the question.

Thanks everyone for your input. I posted on another Mazda forum but, alas, no replies despite over 70 views, so your replies speak well for this forum.

My credo
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is!

That's because an 89 B series Mazda is not a Ranger Based Vehicle. Mazda B series were RBV's from 1994-2009.

He would potentially find more information on his truck in a Mazda forum.
