IIRC, that shaft looks roughly like what I have in the Ranger now, but I've lost track of its source. Probably an F150...

I think pretty much all F-150's have a slip yoke. I know my '02 does.

Probably, but I was referring to the way the tube necks down that 4x4junkie mentioned.

I wonder if some of this weirdness is due to the driveshaft thump TSB that affected (I think it was) '98-'00 models... The replacement shafts for this were the bigger aluminum ones, but did they then go back to steel again?

No way of knowing what came with what but in My brief expedition the ‘98 had an aluminum shaft and the neck down steel shaft was in an ‘03.

Follow up post.

Ended up snagging a steel shaft out of a '99.

And for fuel tank clearance it is baggy with two fingers, probably could get 2.5 but I am not dedicated enough to find out. :icon_thumby:

In the trucks I looked at it seemed like the 98+ trucks had a flatter/wider fuel tank where mine is almost square.

You have a -lot- more clearance around the tank than I do.

I don't doubt it, you can see where the driveshaft had been rubbing on a big cardboard shield thing between the driveshaft and fuel tank in the '99.

Pretty much the same thing we did, I had new u-joints installed, when we got under the truck ittook longer to remove the carrier bearing support and only about 20 minutes to put the drive shaft in place which fit perfectly, did not even come close to the gas tank like I thought it would, crossmember remains doesn't seem to be a problem,

I had to knock 10" of length off the shaft which was done last week, new u-joints and slip yoke grease are due Friday.

Thankfully this truck has never had a carrier bearing so that is not an issue. :yahoo:
