It could work. It isn't an exact replica, but it could work. I have a universal one right now that I think should work nicely. I wanted the one I got for two reasons.

1) It was $5.

2) It fits a group 65 battery if I am so inclined.

I went out of my way to install a 1st generation Explorer battery tray in my 1987, mostly because it would accept the more common Group-65 battery.

And that is the only battery type, I've run in the truck since the original died...

But as the srock battery up to the end of '87 was narrower to allow clearance with the intake air tube I also had to replace the 1987 Air cleaner box and he air tube with one off of an '88.

Due to no direct replacements being available I could find I opted for a 87-89 F series tray. It bolts in, fits a group 65, has about twice the material thickness of original and is galvanized which seems to hold up much better than paint.

It is a little close to my alternator but no issues other than that in my crazy conglomeration of a truck. I have no intake tubes to worry about now and when I did they were on the other side of the truck, I didn't even think about them.

Not sure how Ex's compare but I did check out second gens. Construction was similar to F-series tray but they sit at a slight angle and are riveted in. I figured I would take the four bolts out of a F-series that already had the radiator support removed and in the JY give it a try.

Cruise kinda jumps into the middle but it is all on this page and the next:
