Would it be advantageous to upgrade to a 3” exhaust with the stock manifolds?

Unless you have a +5L engine, or a diesel, nothing benefits from 3 inch pipes.

No, a 3.0 is best at 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" piping. My 94 3.0 5spd has 2 1/2" piping on it along with the Flowmaster original 40. That setup has been on my Ranger for 18 years. Sounds good, now with a rebuilt engine it sounds even better.
Which Flow master did you go with?

My credo
Break it right the first time. Fix it better the next time.

You're right on that. 3 inch is big block territory.

An 88 has no way to see if the cats are there/working, but it is against forum rules to discuss their removal and a Federal felony to remove them. They also don't present nearly the issues they did back in the 70s when they were first introduced. A cat is not a restriction to proper flow unless it is coming apart. A gutted shell will have the same power robbing effect as stupid huge pipes do because that's what it becomes.

Sorry I didn’t specify the year it is a 94 Mazda B3000. I haven’t changed the tag under my name.

94 is still obd1 and you should not have any sensors post cat.

Then change "88" to "94" and leave the rest of my original response the same.

Gutting a cat is the equivalent of wiping before you poop. It makes no sense. You wont gain power, you wont gain fuel efficiency, 3" pipes are going to do nothing but change the noise. All uselss. If putting ridiculously oversized pipes and a goofy flow master on gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside by all means go for it.

Sounds good thanks for the info. I have always been told to get rid of the cat to gain HP but I know you are a mechanic and I will not be doing that. Mostly rednecks telling me to take out the cat.

Years ago, between 75 when they were first mandatory and sometime around 1980 there was some validity to that, but it was more involved that just punching them and putting the empty shell back in. You had to replace the shell with a piece of pipe the same size as the rest of it.

With the advent of ported EFI almost all the heads had to be re-engineered and the exhausts along with them, and the cats were no longer band-aided into systems that weren't designed for them. The whole system was setup as a matched unit and things started working together much better.

I know when I was about 18 or 19 I fell for that same line, punched the cats out on my 2.9 and lost about 2 MPG.
