My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
one thing to add to that axiom with 80's wiring. exposed to the rust belt.

That scares the hell outta me.

have an axiom for times like this.

It may not be THE problem, but it is definitely A problem, so fix it and see what happens.
Thats a good one.

I think im going to let it sit this winter out while i try to figure this shit out/replace whatever. Ill put the 77 back in service for one more winter.

Im gonna order an alternator/ground wire and give it a shot.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Start with the ground wire. You mentioned that it's worn in half. If half the strands are broken, that means the wire can't properly carry all the current. When you have all those big loads turned on, the high current is restricted at the damaged part of the cable. It will get hot there. If the current is restricted, that causes voltage to drop. Good conductors and clean, tight connections all around are necessary for the electrical system to function properly. And, as mentioned, that applies to the hot wires AND the grounds equally.
