Was wondering if anyone could help me with a tranny issue? My 1985 ranger 2.3L with the automatic A4LD transmission is not engaging into gear. The last time I drove it, it all of a sudden “slipped” out of gear, the temp dummy light came on and the truck shut off. After some time, the truck restarted but it would not engage into any gear. No forward gears or reverse. The fluid is full. Very weird, well not for the history of the A4LD I guess. Any thoughts?

If there were not other symptoms or happenings before the failure to engage, and you cannot even feel it engage in reverse, likely you have a problem with the OD portion, and some sheared splines.
The A4LD handles engines from the 2.3 to the 4.0, and was used in extended length Aerostars. A friend had on that was used to tow a horse trailer, long A*, with a 4.0, and it lasted almost 200k miles. They fail because they are not maintained, or are driven hard. Things are not perfect, but it's not that bad a unit.
You can check for pump action by removing the cooler lines and starting the engine. If the pump works, fluid will splurt out of one of the tubes.(I think the one that's higher on the side of the case).
Failure to engage at all is either pump, or the connection that feeds power into the transmission. You'll have to take it apart to find out exactly what broke.
