I have a 2.3 in my Ranger with the YFA feedback carb. It's been humming along ok until recently. The mixture solenoid stuck open and then of course it wouldn't run at all. I got it to close by smacking it with a screwdriver, and then unplugged it. The truck runs a bit rich, but runs and that's how it's been for a while.

I'd like to get it back to some kind of normal; would it be better to try and replace the solenoid or find a non-feedback carb to put on. I think F150s in the late 70s used non-feedback Carters so it shouldn't be too hard to find one. My Ranger has the Duraspark ignition so there shouldn't be any problems with that from what I've read.

If I go the non-feedback route, does anyone know how much of the computer/emissions control stuff on the passenger fender and associated wiring/vacuum lines I can remove without causing other problems?

The original carburetor used on the 2.3 was the Holley-Weber two barrel. Primary was the only source of flow up to a certain rpm, when the secondary barrel opened up. It was used on a lot of 2.3 race prepped engines, I think with modifications.
I think the 83 year model had a 1 barrel carb, in the Y series from Carter.

To fit the 2 bbl, you would need an adapter of some sort onto the intake manifold. Search may lead you to racer walsh or esslinger or a boneyard. Using a one bbl from a f150 would also work, but it is generally going to be a larger bore carburetor, and likely won't work as well as one more fitted to the 2.3.

2.3 Rangers always had 1-barrel carbs until efi. Any late '70s 300 Ford should be fine. The Ranger round port head limits your choices on a 2bbl upgrade. As for the computer, I ripped the whole thing out when I switched an '87 2.0 with a 2-barrel Aisan carb to a 2.3 with a 2100. Your alternator wiring stays separate on the drivers side inner fender but your Duraspark box and distributor go from the drivers side, through the computer, then back. I cut off the plugs I needed from the old harness and spliced it onto the harness where it comes out of the firewall on the drivers side. Seems complicated but all you need is switched power for the coil and the box. Your gauge wiring is also separate and doesn't run through the computer surprisingly. But oddly my backup light wiring was in with the computer harness so I had to splice that together.

Yes, the one on there is a Carter YFA. Thanks Daniel for the tips. I think I'm going to go ahead and replace it this spring or summer when it's a bit warmer. I'll have to do some wire tracing. Vacuum wise, I think i just need lines for the booster, advance, PCV, and choke pull-off; the rest can go.
