President George H W Bush, who died late Friday at age 94 — nearly eight months after his wife of 73 years died at their Houston home — was a congressman, an ambassador to the United Nations and envoy to China, chairman of the Republican National Committee, director of the CIA, two-term vice president and, finally, president.

Bush was a bona fide war hero. He joined the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1942 over the objections of his father, Prescott, who wanted him to stay in school. At one point the youngest pilot in the Navy, he flew 58 missions off the carrier USS San Jacinto.

His wartime exploits won him the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery. He was shot down on Sept. 2, 1944, while completing a bombing run against a Japanese radio tower. Eight others who were shot down in that mission were captured and executed.

service above most. and for sure a war hero. just to get in a plane then, you would have to be wild and fearless.

there is film of him being picked up by a submarine after that mission. something about floating around the Pacific in a rubber raft builds character.

The plane he trained in:

His rescue:

Fun fact, rescuing an aviator would often get the rescuing ship ice cream from the carrier. Only big ships had enough room for an industrial sized ice cream maker so the little guys (destroyers, subs and the like) didn't have that available.

He had my vote in '92 but since I was in second grade and although he won our school it didn't count.

I was born in 1988 so I didn't know much about him. From what I've read he seems like a traditional man's man that we need more of know a days. Now guys think they are real men because they have a beard but still worry if they get mud on their tires. Anyone who served for our country is good in my book. RIP

As a man and a patriot he was good. As a politician he, like his sons, left much to be desired.

Ive always had the utmost respect for the bush family in general. Both HW and W.

He was the last of the true soft spoken heros. He'll be missed.
