are the 4.0 or fords in general notorious for pinging under harder accel.? and if so what can be done about it?

Not that I know of.

Generally, if an engine pings under heavy acceleration, you may need higher grade gas.

I know my dads Suzuki will ping bad towing a trailer with 87 octane, but if he goes to 89 octane, the pinging goes away.

I know there physically can be things wrong in the engine that cuases pinging, but I'm not sure what they are.



I'd try filling it up with half a tank (from empty) (cheaper than a full tank) with 89 octane from somewhere like 76 or Cheveron (I think those two are the best gas) and see if it pings or not.

If it still pings, then you may have a physical problem.
