Anyone actually tested the silencer removal?

I've really thought about removing the intake silencer, but if you look at where the air would then be coming in, it makes me think that I will be drawing in hot air from the engine bay.

Has anyone out there actually tested this for any MPG gains?
Thanks!

Cold air is better for performance, but burns more fuel because the ECM makes the fuel mix richer. Generally speaking, warm air is better for mpg's than cold air, because the computer leans the fuel mix out a bit. Warmer intake air can also reduce engine warm up times, and warm engines are more efficient than cold ones. It's one of the many reasons people get better fuel mileage in the warmer months than the middle of winter.

I don't have figures for removing the air silencer, but removing the airbox completely and switching to a full air intake kit on my 3.0 did increase my fuel economy by an mpg or two.

To be honest, I doubt you'd see much change, if any by just removing the air silencer. It's a free mod though, and doesn't take much time or skill to do, so I'd say it's worth a shot.

Good opportunity for you to do the testing for us.

I think it will be a wash. Warm air = less fuel to maintain proper ratio but that means less HP at the same throttle opening to push the truck down the road. So theoretically you'll need to increase the throttle opening to get the same power.

Warm air may also cause the timing to be retarded.

I also think just removing the silencer will not raise the intake temp that much if anything as the shortened intake is still very close to the opening in the grill.

Once it warms up a bit, I think I will try it.

Now, will removing that tube cause the engine to be more susceptible to sucking in water/things that shouldn't be in an engine?

So when people remove the tube, do they remove the piece the tube sits in also?

The air box stays. All you remove is the snorkel on the front.
