So I was driving today and heard a very loud bang and pop. I pull off to the side of the road and see the transfer case dangling on the skid plate. I already had the front driveshaft out and the u joints broke when the transfer case fell. I was able to pull the transfer case and transmission out today. I found a large amount of metal shavings on the drain plug. The transfer case needs to be replace as most of the mounts broke off. Should I replace the transmission(or rebuild) since it has been making grinding noise and all the metal on the Plug.

Ouch, that hurts.
Around here labor to r+r the trans would be $4-500. You're half way there already. If you have the capabilities and tools I'd tend towards a rebuild. Or find a used low mile replacement.

T-case looks fine? Just the tail housing on the trans appears to be broken. I'd probably find another trans - you could rebuild the one you have and just slap a new tail housing on it, but probably cheaper to just find a good replacement. Ha, you could have even just put a new tail housing on it with the trans in the truck without even pulling it.

How does this even happen? The few times I've seen that level of carnage was when a truck got dropped onto a rock or log and said object hit the t-case from below.

I was driving around with some bad vibrations for awhile. I have been hard on the truck off road and must have stress fractured it than. It gave way when doing 75 on the highway.
