Ugh... The throttle on an engine is a Throttling Valve which controls airflow into engine, closed throttle plate is what provides vacuum. WOT equals no vacuum. Diesels don't have a throttle, don't produce their own vacuum, and are controlled by the amount of fuel injected and the timing of the injection event. Diesels always want as much air as they can get, gassers always want at or near the stoichiometric ratio. Diesel has a much broader range of A/F than gasoline. So... Accelerator.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

FlOoReD... is speaking for himself... it's 7 degrees here this morning.
Gotcha beat. It's currently -24* here with the wind chill. Take away the wind, it's -4. Where's my blankie? And why don't we have a blankie smiley?

That always bugged me too but I call an internal combustion engine a motor too sometimes, even though I know it’s not “right”
So if it's not right, does that mean it's left?

I got over most of the things mentioned here, do most of them... try to catch myself and do make an effort to correct myself but it happens...

The one that drives me nuts is my coworker that has an RC car, electric, and anytime he mentions it he calls the motor an engine for some unknown reason... that one drives me bonkers, but not the only thing that he does that does that :)

I'm surprised no one mentioned pop and soda. It's the same damn thing. If you are like me then you call it a pop. If I ask for a pop then the other person knows what I am talking about. Same thing here. Most people know that when you are asking "why wont my motor start?" I'm not going to look at you all confused like I don't know what a motor is because you didn't call it an engine. Are you seriously venting about this??? Did you run out of people to harass on Craigslist because of their posts not using proper grammar??

I guess while this is still going... here is one of mine. Tranny

For the record...

I've never removed or installed a tranny

I've never exploded a tranny

I've never got a tranny hot

I've never dropped the hammer on a tranny

I've never done a tranny swap

I've never repaired a tranny leak

I've never overhauled a tranny

I have however done all of the above with a transmission.

The point was, they are not the same thing. Use the correct term for what it is you are talking about.

It's called soda because of the sodium salts that are found in naturally carbonated water. No one knows whys its called pop.

Yeah, tranny's are what you find out behind the diner after mid night.

You can still do all those same thing to... Uh, so I'm told...

It bothers my brother no end when someone says VIN number.

Its like saying Vehicle Identification Number Number.

The tranny thing bugs him to.

So as his older brother I feel it my duty to use both terms as much as possible.

And to me it is throttle but I am around a lot of things that don't only have (or may not even have) foot throttles.
