FROM http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/200...on/7#c17197216 Offensive New York Post 'Shoot The Monkey' Cartoon
Posted Feb 18th 2009 11:00AM by Carmen Dixon
Filed under: BlackSpin, Rev. Al Sharpton, Race and Civil Rights, News

Political cartoonists inhabit sacred space in a free democracy. They must be free to express themselves without a filter or none of us will be. But that carte blanche does not trump my rights as a reader to voice my opinion on the perspective that's presented.

I felt the now infamous New Yorker cover was misguided, and I think Sean Delonas's cartoon in Wednesday's edition of the New York Post fails to do anything more than make light of a tragic incident, ignore the history of the NYPD's involvement in controversial shootings and perhaps label President Barack Obama a crazy monkey. ...

Sure, I see the racial implications of the cartoon. But mostly I am still haunted by the killing-murder of Amadou Diallo in 1999 and other shootings linked to the NYPD. I think Delonas's cartoon is offensive and ineffective all around.

Of course, according to TMZ, Al Sharpton fired off a statement:
"The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less-than-casual reference to this when, in the cartoon, they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that, "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."
i dont know how to get the pic of it

people just blew this out of porportion imho. and please no flaming.

Dang, is this the Hooded Section?

It's pretty racist...and I wouldn't be surprised if the NY Post is targeted...

I don't read or buy newspapers anymore...they're almost a thing of the past and maybe the owner wants to file a huge insurance claim and just write it off...

There are about fifty things in current news that this cartoon could be mocking. One being the departure of GWB (also known as "Chimpy") from the helm of the USA, others being the shooting of a pet chimpanzee that mauled the friend of the owner this past week.

The cartoon seems racist because those see it that way WANT to see it that way. If it was a picture of a black man dead on the pavement, it would be blatantly racist without a doubt. Cartoons are art, and art is subjective. Funny thing about subjective material (just to toss some fuel on the flame, the Bible/Koran/etc. is another perfect example) is that two peple looking at it will form two separate opinions as to its meaning.

Such is humanity.

The reference to the "Stimulus Package" would clear any doubt about who it is referring to...or maybe cloud the matter...not sure if GWB was workiing on a stumulus package though...and I really should go looking but I'm kinda busy with other things to be doing that...because once I start looking for something it usually chews up an hour or two...

Al Sharpton is a retard and nobody should ever listen to him.

Pretty sure the monkey getting shot thing was a reference to the actual monkey shooting earlier this week.

I think you could maybe create some kind of parallel between certain racist issues here...but that idiot has to split hairs and stir up trouble like he ALWAYS does.

There is nothing racist about that cartoon.

OK, is that Pee Wee Herman? Sorry, I'm not in the loop...Al Sharpton is a (black) Baptist Minister and I thought Shran's post was related to the pic...now I know...a quick search on Google shows me that the picture is NOT Al Sharpton...

Anyways...the comments at the bottom of the picture indicate that the NY Post was making fun of Obama....

Fun Canadians, Eh!

IMO it could have just as easily been suggesting the stimulus bill was being written by monkeys, as many US citizens will agree it doesn't seem to have been written by anybody with half a brain.

Did Obama actually write the stimulus bill, anyway? Usually bill writing is done by members of congress. Maybe the cartoonist was implying that Pelosi and Reid were of similar intelligence to monkeys, which would obviously have no racial connotations whatsoever.
