My engine starting running like shit today with a flashing engine light. I am taking it to a shop asap. I checked the engine code it said cylinder 5 misfire, and another code engine to lean. I took the spark plug out and it looked good. I just came to realise today that I have never done the timing chain and I am at 149,000 kms. My last Ranger was a 96 2.3 and I never bothered to change it because it was a non contact, chain could break without harming the engine. Is this engine the same like That?
I am taking it to the shop tomorrow morning. I am stuck leaving my fingers crossed until then. I can only hope for good news

What ducking engine?

Also the timing chain isn't going to cause a misfire on a single cylinder. Spark plug can be bad and not have a visually detectable defect, could be a bad plug wire, bad coil, timing chain on a 6 cyl is the last thing I would look at for a single cylinder miss.

150K Kms is about 75K miles, so tune up is due soon, might as well get it out of the way now

Flashing CEL is the computer shutting down an injector. Usually a bad coil causing a miss fire/dead miss will cause the computer to do this. It does this so it doesn't dump raw fuel down the exhaust and cause other issues. I would bet the coil shit the bed.

My understanding is that a flashing CEL means there is a potential for hurting the catalytic convertor. What I would do is the simplest and easiest it means new plugs and wires. Somebody did a nice write up on how to test the ignition modules you might want to find that first.
