I am a ford ranger person. It have been working on them for a while. My Daughters boyfriend has a 1995 explorer. I am pretty sure that the pump or the relay is dead. I felt like a fish out of water working on he ride. I could not find the schrader valve to test the fuel pressure. I was not sure which relay was the correct one. Do I need to drop the tank to change the pump?

Dropping the tank is a standard for a lot of cars the Explorer too_On my B2 I cut out a hole in the floor to get to it.If you cut a hole take the piece of tin your covering the hole with and pound it into the shape of the floor before you cut. It's easier than after the hole is there.

Murphy is an asshole. He just filled the tank which is why I was looking for the Schrader valve to see if there is an air pocket in the fuel line.

Then kick Murphy in the nuts and tell him to leave your daughter alone.

It is likely the pump. This is a condition known as "thermal shock". Basically the idiot driving gets the pump good and hot by running around all day and then decides to fill up when he has run the tank almost bone dry. The cold fuel hitting the hot pump kills it.

That makes sense to me. They are college kids. They are book smart but have no common sense.

So any tips or pionters would help. I have to do this job on the street in front of my Daughters apartment. I think I can rig something up on my transmission jack to lower and lift the full fuel tank.

Drop the tank. It may be a little more work but at least you are not pulling up carpet and cutting holes. It should not be that hard really. Make the dipshiot help you do it as well or just supervise. I would do the supervise route. That way he knows not to do it again and gets a valuable life lesson as well.

Tell him he has no choice in the matter and he needs to man the funk up.
