So I was getting ready to install a new Reverse rotation water pump on my 302 project and discovered that I had installed an 80's timing chain cover instead of the 90's TC and my Rev. rotation pump wouldn't work. So I went to my local Autozone and we did some digging and discovered that a Reverse rotation pump for 87-93 Mustang 302's had round holes instead of the rectangular ones found on the earlier cast iron pumps or the later aluminum ones.
After getting one in, I noticed it had the late model gasket, so we pulled a gasket for the early TC cover and everything lined up perfectly so I could use a reverse rotation pump with the serpentine belt set up that I had.
Here is a link to a quick video I did showing this in better detail.

Hope this helps.
